The powdered plant propelled into unprecedented popularity.

The fragrant aroma of tea fills the air, as the fine green powder playfully mingles with the boiling water, joining forces to give me my 4th cup of matcha tea today. It is safe to say I am a fan and you, after reading this, will be too!

The strain of green tea originates in China in the 11th century; thereafter it was introduced to Japan, where it has birthed a lifestyle of tea ceremonies. Today matcha remains an integral part of the country’s cuisine where it is enjoyed with yogurt, fruit, frothed milk and simply as tea, an all-season favourite made as ice-tea in the summertime.

The marvellous matcha pronounced (Mu-Chuh) has captivated the masses, who are stunned by its health benefits. Boasting impressive properties include an antioxidant called Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) which is 137 times stronger in matcha than ordinary green teas. Whilst growing matcha leaves are shaded for around 20 days which increases the concentration of chlorophyll making it a fantastic detoxifier. The presence of vitamin C and EGCG are the ideal combo for flawless skincare, rejuvenating from within. After weeks of indulging in this green goodness, I have experienced a surge in energy levels throughout the day that can be attributed to the presence of Theanine. Becoming the perfect partner to curb my coffee dependence.

Before we part ways I have to share a secret gem to elevate your matcha experience with Chef Mueni. Our resident chef has taken this versatile ingredient adored by chefs and health junkies alike, creating the most decadent brownies topped with a rich matcha frosting.
